Hassrale Trips - Hammersmith II

Date: Wednesday 22nd March 1989

For most of you the easiest way of getting to pub number 1 will be by district line tube to Stamford Brook; on leaving the station turn right, walk down Goldhawk Road and turn left at traffic lights into King Street. You will then find pub 1 on the right hand side. Several major bus routes run the whole length of King Street.

1. White Hart - 383 King St W6 [18:15]

Beers: Ind Coope Burton, Tetley

Very large premises, should be lots of room, single circular bar. Games area, darts, fruit machines. May have small snacks.

2. The Carpenters Arms - Black Lion Lane [19:00]

Beers: Websters, Ruddles

Comfortable cosy atmosphere. Real fire in chimney (or did the Grotneys have me hallucinating?). Lots of naughty pig jokes on the walls and some adverts from days gone by. Television in a discrete corner. not much food.

3. Cross Keys - 57 Black Lion Lane [19:50]

Beers: Fullers London Pride, ESB

Many historic prints both of the pub itself and surrounding area. Large room at rear of bar.

For the next pub carry on down Black Lion Lane and use the subway below the A4 to get to South Black Lion Lane.

4. Black Lion Tavern - 2 South Black Lion Lane [20:35]

Beers: Websters, Ruddles

Fairly pleasant pub for a Chef & Brewer house. Does food.

5. The Old Ship - Upper Mall [21:20]

Beers: Websters, Ruddles

Now we are by the river, this pub is wedged between the end of Upper Mall and the mysteriously named Oil Mill Lane. A superb house as could be deduced from the fact that it is a past winner of the Evening Standard Pub of the Year award. Lots of beautiful old wood and nautical knick knacks. Last but not least, good selection of food!

6. The Dove - 19 Upper Mall [22:00]

Beers: Fullers Chiswick, Pride, ESB

This famous vantage point for the equally famous boat race is variously known as Dove or Doves. I think that John Wright should arbitrate on this.

7. The Rutland - Lower Mall [22:25]

Beers: Websters, Ruddles

Lots of bric a brac. Meeting place for yuppies and the jeunesse dorée. Almost next door to pub number 8.

8. The Blue Anchor - 13 Lower Mall

Beers: Courage Best & Directors, Greene King

Very attractive inside and out. Seating area outside overlooks the river.

To get home, there are buses and Hammersmith tube station a short walk away.
