Hassrale Trips: Bethnal Green 2

Date: Friday 30th March 1990

This trip includes 3 pubs from the original Bethnal Green trip but does introduce 3 new pubs. The times in brackets are the approximate times of leaving each pub.

The nearest station is Bethnal Green on the Central line. Take the Cambridge Heath Road East exit. Turn right out of the station and then right into Old Ford Road, left into Approach Road and on the left is the first pub.

1. Approach Tavern, 47 Approach Road [18:30]

Beers: King & Barnes Sussex, Festive

Friendly and popular young pub. Was quiet on the night of the trial but could be livelier if the upstairs theatre is being used. Sandwiches available.

Turn back the way you came and turn left into Old Ford Road, walk along until you come to the next pub.

2. Royal Cricketer, 211 Old Ford Road [19:15]

Beers: Flowers Original, Greene King Abbott

Warm and friendly pub. Very welcoming on the night of the trial which was wet and cold. On the local list of listed buildings. Comfortable two level pub with waterside bar and restaurant below and canalside outside patio with seating.

Turn right out of the pub, cross Old Ford Road, turn left into Cypress Place, then right into Cypress Street and on the left is the next pub.

3. Duke of Wellington, 52 Cypress Street [20:00]

Beers: Websters Yorkshire Bitter, Trumans Best

Large basic boozer. Darts and pool. Snacks may be available.

Turn left out of the pub. At the end of the road carry straight on through the alley to Globe Road and across the road is the next pub.

4. Greyhound, 32 Old Ford Road [20:45]

Beers: Courage Best, Directors

Noisy crowded pub but quite friendly. Snacks could be available. Garden.

Cross at the zebra crossing, walk through the estate to Russia Lane, turn left, then left into Bishops Way and across the road on the corner of Cambridge Heath Road is the next pub.

5. White Horse, 236 Cambridge Heath Road [21:30]

Beers: Wethered Bitter

Small one bar pub opposite Cambridge Heath BR station. Dartboard and good jukebox. Food may be available.

Cross the road to the last pub.

6. Hare, 505 Cambridge Heath Road [22:15]

Beers: Websters Yorkshire Bitter, Trumans Best

Friendly local. Good jukebox. Pies and pizzas available.

Bethnal Green tube station is just a short walk away.
