Hassrale Trips: Potters Bar

Date: Tuesday 24th January 1989

Another trip to the north of London this time into the leafy suburban areas of Hertfordshire. The journey follows the same route as the previous New barnet trip leaving Moorgate about every 15 or 20 minutes during the rush hour, picking up at Finsbury Park 11 minutes later, arriving at Potters Bar up to 30 minutes after. You can also catch the trusty 17:16 from Kings Cross.

On arriving at the station proceed into Darkes Lane and turn right. On the left you will find:

1. Potters - Darkes Lane [18:30]

Beers: Wethereds Bitter, Flowers Original

Opens at 17:30. Large one bar pub with restaurant and bar food available. Quiz machine. Plenty of room for seats. Lots of greenery and quite expensive.

2. Wyllotts Manor - Wyllotts Lane (off Darkes Lane) [19:15]

Beers: Websters Yorkshire, Ruddles County and Best

Very old building well worth having a look at. The bar is located at one end and seems to be aimed at the young. One bar only with lots of wood panels. Restaurant.

3. The Bridge - Mutton Lane [20:00]

Beers: Wethereds Bitter, Flowers Original

Opens at 5 pm if you happen to get there too early. Opens all day Friday and Saturday. Large two bar pub with juke box and two pool tables. Beware of White Label on handpumps. Very friendly staff. Sporting pictures.

4. Lion - 2 Barnet Road [20:45]

Beers: Benskins Bitter, Burton

Noisy two bar pub with juke box. Seems to be aimed at the young. No food. Beer quite good though.

5. White Horse - 19 High Street [21:30]

Beers: Ind Coope Bitter, Burton

Large one bar pub with plenty of room.Very old pub and the ambience was nice.

6. Artful Dodger - 66 High Street [22:15]

Beers: Bass, Charringtons IPA, Youngers IPA, Greene King Abbot, Rayments bitter

In the national Good Beer Guide. Despite name probably the best pub in the area. Beer excellent but the range may vary. Only one bar. Quiz machine.

For those that don't have a long way home there is an additional pub

7. Green Man - High Street

Beers: Ind Coope Bitter, Burton

Refurbished with two bars the games being in where the public bar was. Has a garden but does no food.

The time of leaving is because the walk back to the station is long and dry, proceed on from the lst pub and turn left along the Walk. This leads you back to the station.
